AfriCamps at White Elephant in Pongola Game Reserve is opening in December 2019!

AfriCamps Boutique Glamping has fallen in love with KwaZulu-Natal. Less than a month after opening our first camp in KZN and we are ready to start construction of the second one! We’re joining the popular White Elephant Safari experience and building 12 AfriCamps luxury glamping tents in the reserve.

At the foot of the majestic Lebombo Mountains lies the thriving Pongola Game Reserve, the world’s second-oldest private reserve, dating back to 1894. Here, at the shore of Lake Jozini you will find AfriCamps at White Elephant, opening on 16 December 2019.

Enjoy an AfriCamps glamping getaway while experiencing all the thrills of an established private game reserve where buffalo, elephant, rhino, leopard, hyena, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, warthog, 12 different antelope species, and over 350 bird species roam the plains and grace the skies. The occasional splashes of hippo, crocodile, and tigerfish in Lake Jozini provides an exciting water-based safari experience. Safaris, guided bush walks, tiger fishing on Lake Jozini and sundowners by the pool are some of the must-dos during your stay. Spend a day in the life of a rhino and elephant researcher and uncover all the mysteries of these majestic, but vulnerable creatures. The experiences at this camp are both thrilling and educational and will give visitors an insightful view of conservation.

To end off your day, soak up the African sunset from your outdoor wood-fired hot tub and, if you’re lucky, antelope roaming among the tents will pay you a visit.

AfriCamps White Elephant

You will be welcomed by the White Elephant Safari Team led by camp owners Dr. Heinz and his wife, Debbie Kohrs and daughters – Kirstin, Andrea, and Clara. This team also manages the bush camp, umKhaya Cottage and the White Elephant Research camp. White Elephant is situated on Leeuwspoor farm, where Dr Heinz Kohrs grew up. The farm was purchased by Dr Heinz’ father, a cattle farmer, in 1954. He had a passion for conserving the few remaining game species on the farm and in 1963, was awarded the Natal Parks Board Conservationist of the Year trophy. It was during this period that he requested 10 warthogs for re-introduction on to Leeuwspoor from Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve. (Keep an eye out for one of these ‘Pumbas’ during your stay at AfriCamps at White Elephant.)

Like his father, Dr Heinz has a passion for conservation and eco-tourism and is committed to responsible travel that conserves the environment, sustaining the well-being of locals and promoting education.

Dr Heinz (BVSc) is a veterinary surgeon with a practice in Pongola dealing with domestic and wild animals as well as cattle. Dr Kohrs’ special interest lies in the co-existence of man and wildlife. He has also been the driving force behind the reintroduction of elephant, buffalo and rhino into the reserve. He is a founder of the Pongola Game Reserve ‘Space for Elephants’ initiative, which is a partnership between the Pongola Game Reserve and the Space for Elephants foundation (SEF). This project supports conservation and community projects in and around the Pongola Game Reserve. One of the main objectives of SEF is to develop corridors (or ‘highways’) between protected areas to reinstate historic elephant migratory routes.

Elephant Research Project *TOP PICK*
The Elephant Research Project is a unique activity offered at White Elephant as an alternative to Game drives, Walks, Boat cruises and Fishing. This activity is educational, interactive and visual, and includes spending time with our research and conservation staff. Guests depart early morning for a cruise on Lake Jozini to locate and watch the elephants from the boat. After a few hours on the water, guests return to camp.

The activity continues in the afternoon with a visit to our Research Centre, to watch the BBC production “Operation Elephant – The Mission” documenting the initial re-location of our elephants from the Kruger National Park. Guests examine elephant skulls and bones and participate in discussions and debates. Spending time in the world of elephants is enlightening and fascinating, and offers insight into the Reserve history, the re-wilding and re-stocking of animals, nature and conservation issues, and the purpose of the Space for Elephants Foundation and our other research projects.
